A Colorado Springs man wanted on an active warrant for attempted murder, kidnapping and several other felony charges is back in custody after detectives tracked him across the city for hours and finally found him hiding under an air mattress inside a residence, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department.
Brandon Pierce, 33, had been the subject of an ongoing search by the department’s Violent Offender Fugitive Task Force, which had been trying to locate him on warrants for attempted murder, second- and third-degree assault, kidnapping, intimidating a victim or witness, and violating a protection order.
A day of surveillance ends under an air mattress
Detectives said they first spotted Pierce on Wednesday afternoon at a Home Depot, where he was seen returning a rented van before getting into the passenger seat of an associate’s car. Task force agents then tailed the vehicle for an extended period as it wound through Colorado Springs making what police described as “burn moves,” a term for driving patterns meant to detect or shake off surveillance.
The car eventually pulled into a residence in the 4100 block of Cougar Place and left again without Pierce inside, leading investigators to believe he had been dropped off there. Officers set up on the home, and a K-9 team was brought in to search the property.
Police said K-9 Tre located Pierce hiding under an air mattress inside the residence. The dog made contact with Pierce’s arm during the apprehension, and he was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to a hospital for further evaluation. He was then booked into the El Paso County Jail on his outstanding warrants.
Task force targets violent fugitives
The Violent Offender Fugitive Task Force is a standing unit within the Colorado Springs Police Department dedicated to locating suspects wanted on warrants for violent crimes, and Wednesday’s operation was described by the department as a resumption of an active effort to apprehend Pierce specifically.
No one else was reported injured during the arrest, and police have not indicated that any additional suspects were sought in connection with the underlying attempted murder and kidnapping case.
