A Galveston County jury sentenced James Dolphs Elmore Jr. to the maximum 20 years in prison Thursday for manslaughter in the 1986 death of 16-year-old Laura Miller, whose body was found in the stretch of land along Interstate 45 southeast of Houston known as the Texas Killing Fields. Jurors also imposed a $10,000 fine, one day after convicting him.

Prosecutors alleged Elmore prepared a vial of cocaine that was later administered to Miller by Clyde Hedrick, a longtime friend of Elmore’s whom authorities have separately linked to the deaths of several women whose bodies were recovered from the same area. The trial lasted just three days.

A father’s decades-long search

Laura Miller’s father, Tim Miller, has spent nearly 40 years searching for answers in his daughter’s death and went on to found Texas EquuSearch, a nonprofit that provides search and recovery assistance to law enforcement and to other families of missing persons across the country. During the trial, jurors watched video Miller had produced showing himself and Hedrick visiting locations connected to his daughter’s disappearance.

The Texas Killing Fields refers to a rural stretch near I-45 where the bodies of more than 30 girls and young women have been discovered since the 1970s and 1980s. Most of those cases remain unsolved, and investigators have long suspected multiple people may be responsible for different killings tied to the area, rather than a single perpetrator.

A rare conviction in a case defined by unsolved deaths

Elmore’s sentencing marks one of the few instances in which prosecutors have secured a conviction connected to the broader Texas Killing Fields cases, most of which have gone unresolved for generations and left families like the Millers without answers. It is not clear whether Thursday’s sentencing will lead investigators to revisit other unsolved cases tied to Hedrick or the same stretch of highway.
