A shooting in downtown Minneapolis on Wednesday afternoon left one person dead and six others wounded, including two police officers, authorities said. The suspected gunman was also found dead, according to police.

The gunfire broke out around 4:30 p.m. near 15 East Grant Street, close to the intersection of Nicollet Mall and Grant Street and just blocks from the Minneapolis Convention Center in the city’s Loring Park neighborhood, according to the Washington Times and NBC News. Police say shots were fired inside a multi-story apartment building, and the shooter was ultimately found on an upper floor of the tower.

Seven people in total were taken to Hennepin Healthcare Medical Center, according to ABC13. The two wounded officers were reportedly shot in the shin and the abdomen. A high-ranking official told Minneapolis station WCCO that both officers are expected to recover.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey confirmed the officer injuries in a statement, and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said his public safety team had joined the response, adding that state officials were grateful to the law enforcement personnel working to secure the area. FBI Director Kash Patel said the bureau was aware of the shooting and would provide “any and all resources necessary” to assist local investigators, according to CBS Minnesota.

Video from the scene showed officers with rifles trained on the upper floors of the apartment tower as the response unfolded. Witnesses described hearing dozens of gunshots, and the area around Nicollet and Grant was cordoned off for hours as agencies including the ATF and FBI joined Minneapolis police at the scene.

No motive has been released, and police have not identified the shooter or the person who was killed. Minneapolis police have asked the public to avoid the area while the investigation continues.
