Solar Eclipse Live Updates: Europe’s First Total Eclipse in Decades Starts on Path to Darkness

A total solar eclipse swept across Greenland, Iceland and Spain on August 12, marking the first time the path of totality has crossed continental Europe since 1999. The eclipse delivered up to two minutes and 18 seconds of complete daytime darkness along a corridor stretching from the Arctic Ocean to the Mediterranean.

Totality was visible in Reykjavik, Iceland, and in Spanish cities including Bilbao, Santander, Valladolid, Burgos, Zaragoza and Valencia, as well as Palma on the island of Mallorca. In Greenland and Iceland the sky darkened in late afternoon or early evening, while in Spain and northwest Portugal totality arrived closer to sunset.

The event drew large crowds of skywatchers and scientists to viewing sites across the region.
