Severe Weather Knocks Out Power in Illinois, Indiana and Ohio as ‘Ring of Fire’ Strikes Midwest

A band of severe thunderstorms, part of a weather pattern meteorologists call a “ring of fire,” knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of customers across Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. The system produced tornadoes near Chicago and a derecho with winds exceeding 80 mph that downed trees and power lines across the region.

Flights were grounded in Chicago as the storms moved through. Dayton, Ohio, saw its wettest day on record with 2.07 inches of rain. The National Weather Service confirmed multiple tornado touchdowns, including in southern Cook County and eastern Will County, both consistent with EF1 strength.
