Russia Frees Ailing Ex-U.S. Marine Robert Gilman From Detention

Russia has released former U.S. Marine Robert Gilman from detention after more than four years in custody, in what officials described as a Putin-approved pardon. Gilman, from Massachusetts, had been held for 1,666 days before his release.

Family members and U.S. officials welcomed the news, which comes amid ongoing diplomatic contacts between Washington and Moscow over detained Americans.

Gilman’s release adds to a small number of similar cases in recent years in which Americans held in Russian custody have been freed following negotiations between the two governments.
