Oil Extends Gains as Hormuz Deal Remains Elusive: Markets Wrap

Oil prices extended their gains as uncertainty persisted over a potential agreement concerning the Strait of Hormuz. Markets remained focused on developments between Iran and the United States, with the lack of a clear resolution sustaining concerns about disruption to one of the world’s key energy shipping routes.

Iran has reportedly continued to press for a return to a June memorandum of understanding, while maintaining its position on the conditions for reopening the strait. Iranian officials have said that an arrangement mediated through Oman is in its final stages, but that the United States must take action before the waterway can be fully opened.

The conflicting signals have left traders assessing the prospects for an agreement against the risk that negotiations could remain stalled. Any delay in restoring normal passage through Hormuz has the potential to affect energy markets, given the strait’s importance to global oil flows.

Former Trump Defense Secretary Mark Esper criticized Iran’s demands for a full reopening of the strait, describing them as “ridiculous.” His comments added to the public debate over the terms being sought, while markets continued to monitor diplomatic efforts and the possibility of further developments.
