Michigan joins Minnesota in reporting cyberattacks, with FBI investigating

Michigan has joined Minnesota in reporting cyberattacks affecting U.S. water-related infrastructure, as the FBI investigates a broader series of incidents. Reports from several states have raised concerns about attempts to disrupt or access municipal water systems, although the full scope and impact of the attacks remain under investigation.

The incidents have prompted increased scrutiny from federal agencies and state officials. Other reports have indicated that water systems in as many as seven states were targeted during the week, but authorities have not publicly established that every reported event was connected or provided a complete account of the systems affected.

U.S. intelligence and law-enforcement agencies are examining possible links to Iran, with some reports describing the activity as part of a suspected campaign targeting water infrastructure. The investigation is continuing, and public information about the attackers, their motives and the extent of any damage remains limited.

The reports have also generated political claims about responsibility. A claim linking Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz to the cyberattack has been described as baseless and a repetition of debunked allegations. Officials and investigators have not identified evidence supporting that claim.
