Former U.S. Marine Robert Gilman has been released from detention in Russia after more than four years held in custody, according to reports. Gilman, a Massachusetts man, was freed as part of what officials described as a Putin-approved pardon.
His release ends a detention that stretched roughly 1,666 days, and comes amid ongoing diplomatic contacts between Washington and Moscow.
Family members and officials welcomed the news of Gilman’s release, which follows years of advocacy for his return home.
