Severe storms tore through the Midwest, killing at least three people and knocking out power to nearly 800,000 customers across Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. A derecho swept from Iowa into Indiana, with wind gusts exceeding 80 mph downing trees and power lines.
The National Weather Service confirmed multiple tornadoes near Chicago, including in southern Cook County and eastern Will County. Deaths included a person killed in a suspected weather-related house explosion, a 4-year-old boy killed when a tree fell on his Indiana home, and a person in Ohio who died during a medical emergency after flooded roads delayed first responders. Dayton, Ohio, set a daily rainfall record of 2.07 inches, breaking a mark set in 1915.
