A $150M contract for migrant kids’ lawyers goes to a Trump

A Texas law firm with ties to former President Donald Trump has been awarded a $150 million contract to provide legal representation for unaccompanied migrant children, according to reports. The agreement has drawn scrutiny because of the firm’s political connections and the size of the award.

The contract is intended to support legal services for children facing immigration proceedings. Other coverage has described the firm as relatively small, with 26 employees, and said it is expected to represent about 24,000 children in immigration court.

Reports have also characterized the agreement as a no-bid contract, adding to questions about how the firm was selected and whether it has the capacity and experience to handle the work. The concerns come as advocates and others examine the government’s process for assigning legal services contracts involving migrant children.

The reports do not establish that the firm has violated any rules or that the contract will not be carried out. The issues raised largely center on the firm’s connection to Trump, its size relative to the award, and the reported lack of a competitive bidding process.
