Two soldiers were killed Wednesday when an Army Apache helicopter crashed in a field near Salado, Texas, sparking a wildfire that forced evacuations in the area. The helicopter, based out of Fort Hood, did not strike any structures.
Army officials said both crew members died at the scene. The 1st Cavalry Division’s acting commanding general, Brig. Gen. Ethan Diven, offered condolences to the soldiers’ families and fellow troops. Names are being withheld until 24 hours after next-of-kin notification, per Army policy.
An investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.
