Carlee Russell, a 20-year-old nursing student from Alabama, has been charged with two misdemeanors in connection with a kidnapping hoax that she allegedly orchestrated.

Russell claimed that she was kidnapped on July 14, 2023, and held for 49 hours. She said that she was abducted by a man who forced her into his car and drove her to an unknown location. She said that she was eventually able to escape and call the police.
However, police later determined that Russell’s story was false. They said that she had actually staged the kidnapping herself and that she had never been abducted.
Russell has been charged with false reporting to law enforcement and falsely reporting a missing person. She is scheduled to appear in court on August 15, 2023.

The hoax caused a significant amount of public alarm. Police and search teams spent several days looking for Russell, and her story was widely reported in the media.
Russell’s motive for staging the kidnapping is unclear. Police said that she may have been trying to get attention or to avoid going to work.
The charges against Russell carry a maximum penalty of one year in jail and a fine of $2,500.
