The logic of the Secret Service is clear: protect the principal. But the decision to keep those 100 people on that plane without their knowledge or consent reflects an older, more feudal instinct, one that treats the safety of political elites as categorically more important than that of the staff, tech crews, and working press around them.
“It appears that the idea was we can reduce the danger to President Trump by offering up 100 or so people to be killed by the Iranians in his place,” said Steven Cash, a former CIA intelligence officer.
Behind the patriotic speeches, the flags, and the “public servant” branding, this episode reveals a governing class willing to treat everyday working professionals as expendable when the moment calls for it. They didn’t even give those 100 people the dignity of a choice; they simply kept the cabin doors closed and let the flight proceed as planned, using them, unknowingly, as insurance.
