A powerful storm system produced tornadoes and a derecho across the Midwest, killing at least three people and cutting power to nearly 800,000 customers in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. The National Weather Service confirmed tornadoes near Chicago in southern Cook County and eastern Will County.
Wind gusts topped 80 mph, downing trees and power lines across the region. Dayton, Ohio, recorded 2.07 inches of rain in a single day, breaking a 1915 record. Deaths included a suspected weather-related house explosion, a child killed by a falling tree in Indiana, and a person in Ohio who died during a medical emergency when flooded roads delayed emergency responders.
