Iran says deal on Strait of Hormuz is close but is not enough to open the waterway

Iran said a deal on reopening the Strait of Hormuz is close but not yet sufficient to fully reopen the critical waterway, according to officials, as talks with the U.S. and intermediary Oman continue.

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council has issued a new set of demands as conditions for reopening the strait, further complicating negotiations even as both sides describe an agreement as within reach.

A former Trump cabinet official warned that a deal along the lines currently being discussed could represent a “very bad outcome” for U.S. interests in the region.
