House Ethics panel recommends censure for Chuck Edwards after harassment allegations

The House Ethics panel has recommended that Rep. Chuck Edwards be censured following an investigation into allegations of sexual harassment and inappropriate conduct involving female staffers. The recommendation is based on findings outlined in an ethics report, which concluded that Edwards likely violated House rules related to sexual harassment.

The report also described Edwards providing young female staffers with lavish gifts, including jewelry, vacations and guns, as well as displaying what it characterized as “effusive affection.” The allegations and findings concern the nature of Edwards’ relationships with staff members and whether his conduct created an improper workplace environment.

The recommendation to censure Edwards is a formal disciplinary step but does not by itself remove him from Congress. The case has also prompted calls from the House Democratic Women’s Caucus for Edwards to resign. Further action will depend on the House’s consideration of the ethics panel’s recommendation.
