‘We’re going to be in shock’: Officials brace for significant damage as wildfires scorch Washington

Wildfires in eastern Washington have prompted evacuations and emergency preparations as fast-moving flames spread through communities north of Airway Heights and in the Spokane area. Officials have warned that the extent of the damage may not be clear until conditions improve and crews can assess affected areas.

The Spokane Complex Fire was reported to have burned about 3,500 acres, with the fire crossing a river into the city and threatening populated areas. Thousands of residents were evacuated as authorities responded to the aggressive spread of the blaze and worked to limit risks to homes and other structures.

Emergency shelters were opened for people displaced by the fires, including evacuees from the Fairview fire and the Spokane Complex Fire. Authorities have continued urging residents in threatened areas to follow evacuation orders and remain prepared for changing conditions as firefighters work to contain the flames.

Officials are bracing for potentially significant damage once daylight and safer conditions allow more complete inspections. The fires have underscored the dangers posed by rapidly spreading wildfires in the region, where evacuations and shelter operations remain central to the emergency response.
