Spain installs floating barrier off Ceuta after deadly migrant crossings

Spain has installed a floating barrier off the coast of Ceuta following deadly attempts by migrants to reach the Spanish enclave in North Africa. The measure comes after a surge in crossings and a mass breach of the land border, raising concerns about safety and renewed pressure on the territory’s border controls.

Spanish authorities have said that most of the migrants who entered Ceuta have since left, with people being pushed or returned to Morocco. The crossings have intensified debate over how Spain should manage arrivals and its cooperation with Morocco, while further efforts have been reported to restore control along the border.

The episode has also produced political tensions beyond Ceuta. Spain’s prime minister has criticised Italy’s prime minister over the restoration of border controls and called for an emergency meeting, as officials and residents respond to what has been described as an unprecedented influx. The floating barrier is intended to deter further attempts to cross by sea, although broader questions about migration policy and responsibility for those reaching the enclave remain unresolved.
