First parent convicted of murder for son’s school shooting sentenced to 15 years in prison

Colin Gray, the father of the Apalachee High School shooter, was sentenced to 15 years in prison after being convicted in a second-degree murder case. The case has been described as the first in which a parent was convicted of murder in connection with a child’s school shooting.

Prosecutors argued that Gray’s responsibility was tied to providing his son with a rifle used in the shooting. The case focused on the parent’s conduct and accountability in relation to the attack, rather than on whether Gray personally carried it out.

The sentencing follows the conviction of Gray’s son in connection with the Apalachee High School shooting. The case has drawn national attention because of its broader implications for how parents may be held legally responsible when firearms and other warning signs are involved in a child’s violent actions.

Gray’s 15-year sentence represents the court’s decision in the landmark case. The proceedings have been closely followed by victims’ families, school-safety advocates and legal observers examining the limits of parental responsibility in school shooting cases.
