When we reported Eric Zahnd’s death on Thursday, the only unusual detail was that the courthouse closed for an investigation. The Missouri State Highway Patrol has now said why that mattered. Zahnd was the subject of an active criminal investigation when he died.

Zahnd, the longest-serving prosecutor in the Kansas City metro, was found dead inside the Platte County Courthouse on Thursday. His cause of death has not been announced.

What the patrol confirmed

The investigation is a “special investigation” into allegations involving county officials, run by the MSHP’s Division of Drug and Crime Control. Platte County Sheriff Erik Holland requested it on June 15. It remains active.

That is close to the full extent of what has been said publicly. The patrol declined to describe the nature of the allegations or say who brought them, citing the integrity of the ongoing investigation.

It also did not draw any connection between the investigation and Zahnd’s death. That is worth repeating, because the two facts sitting next to each other invite a conclusion that no official has offered.

The timing question

On March 31, Zahnd announced he would not seek reelection. He did it minutes before the candidate filing deadline closed.

That timing is unusual for a prosecutor with his tenure, and it came roughly ten weeks before the sheriff requested the investigation. It is a fact. It is not evidence of anything, and treating it as a motive or an admission is exactly the move to avoid here.

The BeezLoop Take

A man is dead and nobody has said how. He was under investigation and nobody will say for what. Every one of those blanks is an invitation, and filling them in would be wrong.

What matters here is not Zahnd personally. A sheriff asked the state to investigate county officials. The prosecutor, the person who normally decides whether county officials get charged, was reportedly one of the subjects. That conflict exists no matter what the allegations turn out to be, and it is the thing Platte County residents should want answered.

Zahnd cannot answer any of it or defend himself. He gets the same presumption anyone else would. But an investigation that closes quietly and names nothing leaves his career defined by rumor, and that helps nobody, including whoever filed the complaint.

What to watch

The medical examiner’s finding, and whether the MSHP releases anything about the allegations now that the investigation’s central figure has died. Investigations sometimes close quietly when a subject dies. Given that this one concerns county officials generally, and not only Zahnd, it should not.
