A Texas 10 Most Wanted fugitive who slipped away from officers by giving a fake name nearly two weeks earlier was finally cornered inside a Converse, Texas home on September 1, where a SWAT team had to force him out after he refused to come outside on his own, according to Converse police.

Devontae Sweeney, 21, had been the target of a manhunt since August 20, when Converse officers responding to a reported assault near FM 78 and Crestway Road identified him as a suspect. Police say Sweeney gave officers a false name at the scene, then ran before his real identity could be confirmed, leaving investigators to track him down over the following twelve days.

Found hiding inside a house in his own neighborhood

The break came on September 1, when Converse police, working with the Alamo Area Metro SWAT Team, located Sweeney inside a home in the 6700 block of Haven Meadow. Officers said they made numerous attempts to get him to come out and surrender peacefully, but he refused, prompting the tactical team to make entry and find him hiding inside the residence.

By the time he was taken into custody, Sweeney was wanted on six separate warrants, including escape, giving false identifying information and multiple drug charges stacked on top of the original assault allegation involving an elderly victim.

A short list, a long manhunt

Sweeney’s addition to the Texas Department of Public Safety’s 10 Most Wanted list had raised his profile well beyond Bexar County in the days before his capture, with tips reportedly flowing in from residents who recognized him from wanted flyers circulated online and on local news. Converse police credited the Alamo Area Metro SWAT Team and the tip line for closing out the case without anyone being hurt.
