The Dallas Stars released their 2026-27 promotional schedule last week and quietly dropped something that’s been on the calendar for at least five years running: Pride Night. Nobody at the organization wants to explain why, and that silence is telling its own story.

What’s missing, and what replaced it

The Stars will still host theme nights honoring Black history, military service, first responders, teachers and Noche Mexicana this season. What’s gone is Pride Night, the annual game celebrating LGBTQ fans that the franchise has run in recent years. In its place is a new “Hockey Unites Us: Women in Sports Night” set for March 23 against the Carolina Hurricanes, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Team spokesperson Joe Calvillo said the new night “allows our organization to use our platform to celebrate and support a different underrepresented community each season.” Asked directly why the team couldn’t do both a Pride Night and a women’s night, the Stars declined to elaborate further, per the Dallas Observer.

The NHL isn’t uniform on this

Dallas is now one of the few NHL clubs skipping Pride Night entirely this season, and the timing stands out because the Los Angeles Kings are bringing theirs back after their own retreat from Pride-themed jerseys a couple seasons ago. League-wide, Pride Nights became a flashpoint a few years back when several players refused to wear rainbow-themed warmup jerseys, and teams have quietly been renegotiating how loudly they want to lean into the tradition ever since.

Read the room, or don’t

A pro sports franchise doesn’t owe anybody a press conference over a promotional calendar, and “we’re rotating which community we celebrate” is a defensible position on paper. But when the one night that disappears is the one that’s drawn political heat in other NHL cities, and the team won’t say a word beyond a canned quote, fans are going to connect those dots themselves. The backlash online has been immediate, with longtime Stars fans saying the swap feels less like inclusion and more like an organization trying to avoid a headache it used to be willing to have.

Sports franchises love talking about being a platform for the community until the community they’re platforming becomes inconvenient. Dallas didn’t cancel anything loudly. It just let one thing quietly not make the list, and let the fans do the math.
