YouTube Premium’s individual ad free plan rose from $13.99 to $15.99 a month earlier this year, the platform’s first price increase since 2023 and its biggest jump in years. New subscribers started paying the higher rate in April, and existing subscribers were moved onto it in June. The family plan saw the largest single increase, up $4 to $26.99 a month.

Why Did YouTube Wait Three Years Between Price Increases?

YouTube’s own answer has been the usual one for subscription price increases: rising content and operating costs. The harder to ignore pattern sits underneath that explanation. The free, ad supported version of YouTube has grown steadily more interrupted by unskippable ads over the same years Premium has existed as the alternative, and a subscription tier only looks like good value relative to how annoying the free tier has been allowed to become.

None of this is unique to YouTube among ad supported platforms, and $15.99 a month is not, on its own, an unreasonable price for ad free video and music together. But three years without a price change, followed by a jump straight into the same monthly range as most major streaming services, is a reminder that the free version of a platform this dominant isn’t really free, it’s priced in ads, and the price of removing them only goes one direction.
