Apple’s iPhone 18 lineup is still weeks away, but search interest is already climbing, and this year there’s an actual reason for it: Apple is expected to release its first foldable phone alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max at a September event, widely expected the week of September 7.

The foldable is rumored to open book-style, similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Fold, with a roughly 5.5-inch outer display and a 7.8-inch inner display when unfolded. Estimates put the price well above the standard Pro lineup, somewhere between $2,000 and $2,500. The standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e aren’t expected until spring 2027, so Apple is splitting this launch cycle into two waves for the first time.

Why This One Feels Different

Most annual iPhone updates land as incremental refinements: a better camera sensor, a faster chip, a slightly different bezel. A foldable form factor is a real hardware change, which is likely why this particular release cycle is generating more search interest than the past few years’ upgrades did. Whether the actual product justifies the attention won’t be clear until people can use one.

The $2,000+ price point is also doing something the standard upgrade cycle doesn’t: forcing a real conversation about whether a foldable phone is worth that premium over a normal Pro Max, or whether it’s mostly buying into being early. Financing plans that split the cost into monthly payments make that decision easier to defer, whether or not that’s a good thing for the buyer’s budget in the long run.
